Volunteers generally arrive from 10:30am on a Wednesday to help set up the hall and leave at around 2:10pm (depending on how busy it’s been!) having helped pack away. We welcome volunteers who can give their time every week, fortnightly, once a month or in the holidays!

Please be aware that, whilst we can welcome volunteers under the age of 18, they will need to be supervised by a parent or guardian or adult that knows them whilst at the Foodbank.

Please email info@hangletonfoodbank.org to discuss this.

Volunteer Roles

Front of House Volunteer

Front of House volunteers welcome clients at the Food Bank and sit with them to discuss their situation and other needs. Skills include listening and befriending, talking to clients about their situation, noting down relevant information, signposting clients to relevant support services and going through our packing lists with them.

Back of House Volunteer

Back of House volunteers work in the store room, sorting donations and packing clients' bags according to their requests following our ‘packing list’. There is also fresh fruit and veg to bag up at the beginning of each session. Please note this role may include lifting heavy bags of food.

Kitchen Volunteer

Kitchen volunteers serve hot drinks and lunch to clients and keep the kitchen and food areas clean and tidy following food hygiene standards.

Tesco Tuesday Collections

Each Tuesday evening volunteers in teams of two collect donations from Tesco Hove (Church Rd) and Waitrose Hove and deliver items to the Foodbank.

Testimonial

We also welcome people who have used the Foodbank to volunteer their time when they no longer need support. Below is their experience in their own words.

When both our benefits were finally reinstated we were almost sad about not having our weekly trip across the road to see the lovely volunteers at the foodbank. We started going to the coffee mornings up the road at St Peter’s. After a while I decided to go back to the foodbank but this time as a volunteer. I’d appreciated the friendship and care that had been shown to me so much that I wanted to be able to give that to someone else who was in a similar position to the one I’d found myself in.

The friendship and sense of community that I get from volunteering has helped me enormously. I can’t work because I have mental health problems. I’m also not always able to volunteer and have had quite a number of months off during my couple of years at the foodbank. But they always understand, they never put pressure on me to come back, but when I do I’m welcomed with open arms.
